As our body's largest organ, your skin is your most important immune defense barrier as well as your largest organ for eliminating waste. Commercial products with harmful petroleum ingredients can plasticize and "constipate" your skin, making germs more likely to get in and toxins less likely to get out of your body. The result: neither you nor your skin are as radiant and healthy as you could be!

Every day we use products that we think are safe; but the truth is that products are NOT always safe - and manufacturers don't have to tell us so. Ever since 1938 - when the PDA granted self-regulation to the cosmetics industry - such products can be marketed without government approval of ingredients, regardless of what tests show. Most of the 25,000 chemicals used have not been tested for long-term toxic effects. In a typical day, you might be exposed to over 200 different chemicals, many of which are suspected of causing cancer or disrupting hormones. EPA tests conclude that ingredients in shampoos, dyes, and other personal care products may be playing havoc with hormones that control reproduction and development.

AVOID THESE HARMFUL, HAZARDOUS 'TOUCH-ME-NOT" INGREDIENTS!
Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol: Found in Anti-freeze. Acts as a "surfactant11 (wetting agent and solvent). Penetrates skin and weakens protein and cellular structure. Strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! The EPA considers PG so toxic that workers are required to wear protective clothing and to dispose of PG by burying it in the ground. PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. But there isn't even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than in most industrial applications.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Detergents that pose serious health threats. Used in garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS experience eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation, and even death. Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS. May damage the skin's immune system. Can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens. Your body may retain the SLS for up to five days and maintain residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs, and brain.

DEA (diethanolamine). MEA (Monoethanolaniine) & TEA (triethanolamine): Hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing nitrates. Restricted in Europe due to carcinogenic effects, yet they are still used in the U.S. Americans may be exposed 10-20 times per day with shampoos, shaving creams and bubble baths. Dr. Samuel Epstein (Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated applications of DEA-based detergents result in major increase in liver and kidney cancer. The PDA's John Bailey says, "the risk is significantly increased for children."

Sodium Hydroxide; The most recent addition to our personal care products. This is a poison (caustic lye) found in drain cleaners, yet is now found in our children and adult toothpaste!

Triclosan: Synthetic "antibacterial" with a chemical structure similar to Agent Orange! The EPA registers it as a pesticide, giving it high scores as a risk to human health and the environment. It is in a class of chemicals suspected of causing cancer in humans. It may produce dioxin, a hormone-disrupting chemical with toxic effects measured in the parts per trillion; that is only one drop in 300 Olympic-size swimming pools! Hormone disrupters pose enormous long-term chronic health risks. It can change genetic material, decrease fertility and sexual function, and foster birth defects. Internally, it can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, and convulsions. Stored in body fat, it can accumulate to toxic levels, damaging the liver, kidneys and lungs, and can cause paralysis, brain hemorrhages and heart problems. Tufts University School of Medicine says Triclosan can force the emergence of "super bugs" that it cannot kill. Its widespread use in antibacterial cleansers, toothpastes and household products may have nightmarish implications on future generations.

DMDM & Urea (Imidazolidinyl): Two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde which cause joint pain, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and loss of sleep. Exposure also irritates the respiratory system; triggers heart palpitations or asthma, and aggravates coughs and colds. Other side effects include weakening the immune system and cancer.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that reduces the skin's natural moisture. Increases the appearance of aging and leaves you vulnerable to bacteria. Used in spray-on oven cleaners and cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.

Liutane or Propane: Found in aerosol products. May be narcotic and cause asphyxiation.

Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): Drying, irritating solvent that strips skin's moisture and immune barrier, making you vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Made from a petroleum derivative found in shellac and antifreeze as well as personal care products. Promotes brown spots and premature aging. A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients says it may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting, and coma. Fatal ingested dose is one ounce or less.

Mineral Oil: Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic wrap, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil!
bullet FD&C Color Pigments: Synthetic colors from coal tar that deposits toxins onto the skin, causing skin irritation. Absorption of certain colors can cause depletion of oxygen in the body and death. Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic.

Fragrances: Can contain up to four thousand ingredients (including animal urine), many toxic or carcinogenic. Causes headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing, vomiting, and skin irritation. Real Salt Lake wins the MLS Cup

Real Salt Lake wins the MLS Cup in the seventh round of penalty kicks! Once again, Nick Rimando proved the value of a goalkeeper with catlike reflexes in carrying his team through the penalty kick round. Rimando was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his efforts during a hard fought match with the LA Galaxy.

Not many soccer pundits gave RSL a chance against the experienced Galaxy squad, and the ESPN announcers, Julie Foudy excepted, seemed unable to breath during their commentary without first praising David Beckham and Landon Donovan, but as Jason Kreis, coach of RSL commented post-game, “We believed in ourselves as much as people outside the locker room didn’t believe in us.” RSL, down after the first half of play due to a solid goal by the Galaxy’s Mike Magee, fought back with an equalizer from RSL’s Robbie Findley.

When regular time and the added thirty minutes of overtime expired, it was all down to the Galaxy’s backup keeper, Josh Saunders, and RSL’s Nick Rimando, who had faced PKs against Chicago Fire just a week ago. The LA Galaxy’s starting keeper, Donovan Ricketts, had gone out with a hand injury in the second period. Saunders played well in goal, but Rimando was better, and in the end, Rimando’s goalkeeping during the PK period was the difference.

RSL deserved the win. The team had a rough campaign this year, but they learned to be tough and to never give up.

So, one of the things that's very popular right now are these super juices. A lot of people are talking about acai berry, goji berry, but the one we've chosen to study is something called mangosteen. The leading manufacturer is a company called XanGo, and we've worked with them to evaluate their product, which is a mangosteen juice. It includes not only the fruit but also the rind of the fruit. And it's that rind that contains some unique anti-inflammatory agents called xanthones.

Well in many animal studies and in some anecdotal human experiences we've seen pretty remarkable anti-inflammatory effects. So we're actually conducting a large trial of about 220 patients, all of whom have atrial fibrillation and as they go to cardioversion, where they get a shock to the heart to restore normal rhythm, those people are then going to either drink the juice or a placebo juice and the idea being that recurrent atrial fibrillation is often driven by how much inflammation is in the body.

So if mangosteen does what we think it will, reduces the inflammation, we anticipate we'll see less atrial fibrillation recurring in those patients drinking the actual juice. We're also looking at a number of markers for inflammation and antioxidant capabilities, so there's a lot of interest, because if it's positive, this'll really be the first clinical trial to validate the use of this novel juice and there's plenty of other applications that we'll pursue in other research studies.

The estimated 9,500 people flocking today to the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center are testament to the company's expansion strategy during tough economic times, XanGo CEO Robert Conlee says. XanGo's annual Salt Lake City convention gets up to full steam today with international troops of independent distributors getting rah-rah messages and help with sales techniques.

The Lehi-based company -- its name adorns the jerseys of the Real Salt Lake professional soccer team -- is approaching $2 billion in sales since its founding seven years ago, Conlee said Thursday. XanGo is privately held, so the numbers cannot be verified with public reports. But Conlee said company decided a year ago when he came on board to invest in increasing sales and attracting new distributors for XanGo's signature juice the company touts for its nutritional value.
"We made a decision to invest our way out of the recession, out of any slowdown that might have hit us," said Conlee. XanGo rocketed to success in 2002 when it launched its XanGo Juice drink made from the Southeast Asian fruit mangosteen. Now, there are 1.43 million independent distributors in 31 countries. In addition, the company this year began marketing Eleviv, a capsule the company says decreases stress, improves mood and enhances sleep. Last year, XanGo began offering a line of skin-care products under the name Glimpse. Conlee said Eleviv recently helped the company set sales records. "We had our largest single revenue day on July 20," he said.

One of the highlights of this year's convention was the appearance Wednesday of the founders of Operation Smile, a group that carries out or facilitates the surgeries to fix cleft lips and palates and other facial deformities of children in poor countries. XanGo's distributors contribute to the nonprofit group, and the company has sent employees to Mexico to help with a mission. Bill and Kathy Magee -- he's a surgeon; she's a nurse -- founded Operation Smile 27 years ago after participating in a volunteer effort in the Philippines where 250 were operated on out of 300 children who had showed up. Since then, "We've done 135,000 surgeries in 51 countries," said Kathy Magee. In the developing countries, about one in 500 kids is born with a cleft lip or palate, said Bill Magee. XanGo raised $40,000 for an Operation Smile mission in Thailand, where the company obtains the mangosteen fruit for its products.

For twenty-one years I have been a student and writer of American history. It is how I have made my living. It is what has consumed my time. But in between this Spartan business of researching and writing about people who are long dead and events that are mostly forgotten, I have had to do other things to make a living.

Since 1974 I have also written and studied network marketing. For four years, I actually built my own Amway business, reaching the diamond level. And for many years thereafter I have traveled the world, learning from networking leaders and sharing that knowledge with audiences at their great conventions.

By 1979 my philanthropic work, starting the charity awards, and my political work for the Reagans and Bushes, began dominating my calendar. But I had never forgotten the idea of a residual, ongoing income for retirement and how it might possibly fund my dreams of even more reading and writing of history.

Recently, when it became known that I had formally retired from Amway, I was contacted by eight other networking companies. The owners of five of the enterprises called or met with me personally, extolling the virtues of their companies. One owner-distributor offered me a million dollars to join him.

But I chose my steps carefully.

I was looking for a business that would be the easiest, for the average person, to make the most money with the least amount of time. I had learned well the lesson, that if an opportunity doesn’t work for the average person, like myself, it will eventually stop working for the exceptional person.

The first thing was a fair plan. A binary was out. They were devastating to the average person. I struggled with that. One of my best friends was in a binary. But I did not want in a business that hurt masses of people and left them feeling guilty about their failure, even when it was the expectation, indeed – even a necessity for the company’s survival – that they fail.

But I was also warned not to get into a business that front loaded the payout. One very chastised and humble networking leader told me that his company was failing because they had moved the bonuses all to the front. His people could easily make $500 a month, he said sadly, but they could only double that with great difficulty. As one of my friends commented last night, a networking business needs a vast middle class, like the United States, with many who quickly earn enough to justify doing it fulltime, a strong base from which to launch higher. Again and again I was told of the one company that had the perfect plan. And twice this information came to me from the mouths of the very owners of the other companies, men and women who were trying to get me to join their enterprise. Twice I was told that they had copied this plan.

And secondly, the company had to have a product with a compelling reason for people to buy. There are several companies with good products that make it easy to build a network. Distributors who get into those companies are astonished at the amount of money they can make in a short period of time without breaking a sweat. “Yes, but how much do you make off the product?” Someone will invariably ask. “This IS off of the product,” comes back the answer.

Well, it so happens that my wife, Myriam, used the product of this particular company, insisting that it was making a difference for our youngest daughter.

“It’s a placebo,” I said, chuckling at her naiveté. No one wants their wife looking the fool.

“Well, so what?” she would glower back, “It works.”

And then one night after an hour on the internet I told her that she could get the same benefits from buying pomegranate juice at the grocery store and save us some inconvenience and money to boot.

Well, my wife did just that. We bought juices at the grocery store. But within weeks all the symptoms came back.

“Look,” she said. “Our daughter has been to doctors in Arizona, Texas, Virginia and Maryland. We have driven her to holistic clinics in Pennsylvania, arriving home exhausted at midnight. She has had MRI’s and CAT scans and more blood tests than we can count. She has taken endless bottles of medicines or vitamins and mineral combinations or nothing at all. In ten years this is the first thing that has given her any relief.”

“Okay,” I pouted, “Back on the placebo.”

When you combine a fair marketing plan with a compelling product narrative it does not take long to build a network. And you can stand in front of people and look them in the eyes and know that you are sharing an idea that can be replicated.

The process of networking has long left a distasteful feeling in my mouth. I am too private a person. And there can be no recruitment without rejection. A part of me would rather live with less money, on a college campus, reading and writing than taking an emotional risk. I have a low threshold of pain.

But this company soared to $500 million, even without an educational, tool based system. They did it on three things, a fair marketing plan, an easy to sell product, and credible branding. (There is a nice story in a recent issue of Nutrition Business, featuring the style of their bottle, of all things.) For me, this company takes the embarrassment out of networking.

And finally, the future of this company’s founders is directly related to the success of the field. They are young and their success in life depends on the success of their distributors. This is not a cow that they milk. They aren’t manipulating the numbers or starving markets of product in order to keep down costs and control growth. They want and need their company to grow and that bodes well for those of us who are taking this adventurous ride with them. If they have succeeded without systems it is not because they are afraid of them. Indeed, they have openly embraced systems that will help the field, saying to professional networkers, “come on, do your thing.” They are not afraid of the prosperity of their distributors. They are counting on it.

And so I chose the Lamborghini of network marketing. Other enterprises have risen and fallen around them. Many others will do the same in the years ahead. This one proved to me that it is the easiest for the average person to make the most money with the least amount of time. It has a sure and steady trajectory. I chose XanGo.

Offering real opportunity, XanGo hits it’s 1 Million distributor in a slumping economy

LEHI, Utah, Nov 03, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The news appears grim. 9.5 million jobless. 84,000 jobs cut in September alone. A five-year unemployment rate high of 6.1 percent.
And yet, as virtually every job category is making cuts, at worst, or being extremely cautious, at best, direct selling and XanGo, LLC, are thriving. In fact, so much so, that XanGo recently hit its
1 millionth distributor.

"In what many may see as a void of options in this economy, there is a very real and lucrative opportunity, and that opportunity is direct selling," said XanGo Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Conlee. "If you believe in the product and are prepared to work hard, you will succeed. I've seen it time and again. As a matter of fact, we've seen it 1 million times at XanGo."

An estimated 15 million Americans participate in direct selling totaling more than $30 billion in sales, according to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), where the majority are independent business people or "micro-entrepreneurs" who sell the products or services of a company they choose to represent. The wellness product category, in particular, has been experiencing gains as reflected in the latest full-year sales results.

"Direct selling companies like XanGo offer a number of advantages," said professor of business ethics Larry Chonko, Ph.D., University of Texas Arlington. "They have a proven business model, know what works in the field, have great products, know their markets and provide everything an entrepreneur needs to be successful."
By way of example, the XanGo compensation plan provides for 50 percent of each XanGo product sold going straight back to commission payments for distributors. Qualified distributors also benefit from a global bonus pool paid quarterly. And in a time of off-the-charts rising costs, distributors get tax write-offs for expenses such as gas, meals, cell phone and home offices.

"XanGo represents a recession-proof job," said Dwayne Dwyer, a six-year XanGo distributor and the very first of XanGo's 1 million distributors. "People get out of it what they put into it. The return on your time investment shows, and it shows quickly."

XanGo distributors typically range in age from 21 to 65 with men and women equally represented. Couples, singles and families are all part of the mix as is everyone from people switching careers to people formerly in other direct sales companies. And while XanGo's distributor ranks mostly include these kinds of everyday people looking to supplement or replace their existing income, they also include celebrities such as Carl Lewis and Natalie Imbruglia.
